此片根据同名小说改编而成。卡车司机卡格尼为了得到青梅竹马的女友的认可，并支付弟弟学习音乐的费用，准备在拳击台登上顶峰，但由于得罪了黑社会，在一次比赛中被对手喷在拳击手套上酸液弄瞎了眼睛......
华纳公司曾对影片进行大幅度的删减，令这部里维克最棒的作品失色不少。在次年推出导演处女作《常青树》的伊利亚·卡赞，在影片中令人难忘地扮演了一个不入流的小混混，而谢里登也再次让人领略到其平民本色的优秀表演技巧。
